Professional identity

I am a senior software engineer who specializes in moving mature systems forward without pretending they can be rebuilt from scratch. My work sits at the intersection of pragmatic architecture, incremental delivery, and the teams responsible for both.

How I work

I ask practical “what if?” questions, look for simpler solutions before adding complexity, and prefer changes that teams can adopt incrementally. I care about accessibility, performance, maintainability, and the people affected by software decisions, including users today and engineers tomorrow.

Teaching and community

Teaching and community work are part of how I think about engineering. I have reached more than 60,000 learners through LinkedIn Learning courses, published MongoDB for Jobseekers, founded LearnMongo.com, and been selected as a MongoDB Champion for three years.

Coaching

One of my biggest passions outside software is coaching youth soccer. I currently work in the Pride Soccer Club Junior Academy in Colorado Springs and hold a US Soccer National D License along with the US Soccer Grassroots licenses. I have also coached recreational teams, competitive club sides, summer camps, and clinics, including camps hosted at the United States Air Force Academy. Many of the same principles guide both coaching and engineering: teach fundamentals well, build confidence through repetition, help individuals improve while strengthening the team, and think long-term rather than chasing quick wins.

Family

My wife and I live in Colorado Springs with our two sons. We are active at Mountain Springs Church, and both boys attend The Classical Academy. As a family we enjoy soccer, hiking, camping, road trips, cooking, and exploring the Rocky Mountains. Much of our life together revolves around youth soccer and finding new adventures along the way.
